Herding Cattle The call of cattle rang through the still air, their forms barely visible through the thick mist that blanketed the farmstead. As a deeper call rang out, the massive form of the herd bull sauntered around the pen with slow, powerful strides. Ears flicking away some unseen irritant, his left brushed the stout horn that sprouted there, while his right waved over the empty stump of his right, lost a few years back in a fight with a bear. Crossing Country Light green eyes glowed in the dim light of the Alaskan summer night. Ears flicking away the nagging buzz of a mosquito a curly tokota slipped silently between the trees, the limp body of a hare hanging from his jaws. Pausing in the shadows at the edge of the clearing where the rest of the curly’s group had camped for the night, Kitetsu froze when he felt more than saw his trainer’s eyes watching him. Eyes narrowing in displeasure the curly male slid into the clearing, his eyes searching out the form of Veng seated atop a small outcrop on the cliffside that formed one side of the camp. Short light brown hair moved lazily in a soft breeze while the woman watched her charge with a silver gaze. For a few tense seconds Kitetsu met her gaze before looking away in a show of deference. Of Pups and Dams The sun creeped up from its brief dip below the horizon, spreading its rays over the vast tundra. A thick bed of lichen and heath covered the earth, and with summer in full swing, the ground was wet and soft while lakes and streams scattered across the normally frozen land. Temperatures wavered around forty degrees Fahrenheit, but would probably rise as the day wore on. Sub total: 35Waterfalls and Clearings The still morning air was broken by the harsh sounds of conflict. Within a clearing adjacent a partially frozen river, two tokotas were locked in battle. The first, Kitetsu, a pale curly male was glaring with pale green eyes and bared his teeth at the lilac female who stood across from him. Her head also lowered with teeth showing. Meeting his gaze squarely, her own dark blue eyes glowing with the force of her will. A long gash ran down one of Siha’s forelegs, but she paid the wound no heed as she planted herself stoutly in front of the crouched form of another tokota. A small, exceedingly fluffy pup glared at the curly from behind Siha. Inti, as she was named, was an adolescent barbary female, her coat a golden tawny in color. A mixture of snow, dead grass and leaves covered her fur and clotted in the line of a scratch running along her body. Long Travels The low, echoing call of an elk rolled through the cold morning air. A solitary jet black elk seemed to glide amongst stunted tundra trees as it let out another haunting bugle. It was a beautiful sight, until the realization hit that the animal was far too north for its species, and upon closer inspection stood nearly two feet taller than an average bull. Tutela, a massive, golden tundra tokota stepped out of the morning mist to stand alongside him, her shoulders a few inches higher than those of the elk. Lowering her head slightly in a show of respect she shifted to turn her lavender gaze to four pale silhouettes behind her. Tail raising slightly in a show of dominance as she let out a low, commanding growl for them to come forward.
